A brief visit to NY, theater tickets one night, and museums all day the second day. Toluache perfect for post-theater: location as well as food. We loved the trio of guacs, great margaritas, and I shared the black cod with mexican chocolate and pineapple pico de gallo. Great! The next night The Modern was our perfect place for post-museum day. The menu is wonderfully deep: there is no sense that you are limited because of the prix fixe approach. Portion size is brilliant: just enough so that you end the meal satisfied and not stuffed and this is one of the few prix fixe menus where we found each of our four courses equally enchanting and creative. We all loved the tiny nettle souffle (sorry I don't recall it's other ingredients) with nasturtium sauce which was the amuse bouche. gorgeous to look out and intriguing as well as perfectly spring seasonal. I started with Alsatian White Asparagus, having an unfulfilled desire to discover why I should like white asparagus (haven't been impressed with them before). These were revelatory: beautifully paired with smoked salmon, robust and subtle. Each subsequent dish equally cherished and presented it's ingredients: a loup de mer souffle, veal tenderloin with truffle sauce, and a dark chocolate desert which reminded me that caramel ice cream is not a cliche. The wine list is grand: we had a wonderful Bandol Rose for a most reasonable price. Small things add up as generous additions: the chocolate tray is decadent, the tiny ice cream cones over the top, and the little gift bag as you leave reminded me of the silly and charming Ducasse marshmallows from his Monte Carlo restaurant. Really a joyful and indulgent experience. Love you NY!!!
