moderately priced, conversation-friendly place downtown?

Long story short, I am meeting a gentleman friend next Thursday who I haven't seen in a while. I live in the East Village and would like to go with him to a place where we can have an actual heartfelt conversation. And eat. Booth would be wonderful. Screaming crowds/teeny tiny tables crammed together/DJs - not wonderful.

I would like to stay around the East Village but can travel in the downtown area. I thought perhaps somewhere in the far eats might be less frenetic - Casimir? Kasadela? (I haven't been to either of these places.)

advice welcome. thanks.
