Seeing the mention of mochi in one of the Chinatown lunch series posts below reminded me: fairly recently, while dining at Moki's on Cortland, I had a most wonderful dessert special: three flavors of Mochi Ice Cream. It consisted of excellent ice cream, chocolate and several tropical flavors (mango, and perhaps coconut pineapple?), shaped into a ball and coated in a layer of a pastry type 'crust' made out of rice flour or pastry(presumably somehow similar to mochi pastries, though I confess to being less than very familiar with those). Each rice-flour crust was also flavored in a contrasting yet complimentary flavor.
I thought the flavor and texture combinations were unbeatable: chewy, creamy and sort of crispy all at the same time, and just exploding with taste. It was one of those, 'why have I never heard of this before' types of experiences, so much so that I was distracted and forgot to ask the server for more information. Google turns up the website below, which unfortunately didn't give a lot of information.
Does anyone know where I can buy this treat in SF, and whether it keeps any time at all in the freezer, or must be eated right away?
