Minneapolis: Milda's Cafe, home of the Pasty

I've had some business on the north side lately so I thought I would (finally, after hearing about it for years) try a Milda's pasty (rhymes with "nasty"). I went last Thursday, only to discover that pasties are only available MWF. So I settled for eggs, sausage and some truly terrific hash browns with fried onions (Milda's is a first rate breakfast joint). I went back today (Monday) for my pasty.

Well, it's... pretty good. It's a softball sized pastry stuffed with meat and cubed potatoes (*lots* of cubed potatoes). The pastry is quite flavorful but the pasty is quite dry and very heavy. I'd imagined, inaccurately, something like a pot pie. For an extra 50 cents you can get a side of gravy and you really need this, to make the thing palatable. I ate it at 11:00 A.M. and at 7:00 P.M. I still hadn't recovered my appetite. I'm glad I tried it but the next time I go to Milda's -- a very cool pace, imo -- I'll stick to the eggs.

Milda's is on Glenwood Ave. N. at Logan. Breakfast and lunch only (closes at 3 P.M.).
