Milliken Bar & Restaurant
4016 Finch Avenue East, Scarborough
My dad first discovered this restaurant and immediately took the rest of the family to try the dim sum. Sandwiched in between a gas station and another Chinese restaurant, Milliken Bar & Restaurant is easy to miss. Newly renovated, the interior is clean and modern from the furniture itself to the dishes used. The staff is very friendly, helpful and they speak both Chinese and English. Free parking is available at the rear.
Now onto the food! This restaurant not only had the standard dim sum dishes such as crystal shrimp dumplings (har gao), lotus glutinous rice, steamed rice roll just to name a few, but they also had their own specialty dishes. We tried the black sesame ball with bitter melon and salted egg yolk and it was truly delicious and one of a kind! It is similar to the deep fried, black sesame ball with red bean paste as it has a glutinous outer shell with a rich filling. They jazzed up the sesame ball and made it into a modern Guang Zhou version with bitter melon juice and the salted egg yolk. Since they used the juice, this dessert is not bitter at all but has a sweetness that is brought out by the mild saltiness of the egg. The only criticism I have for this dish is that it is not black sesame as stated in the menu but white sesame.
Another dish mentionable dish is their steamed rice rolls, a classic dim sum. The rice roll dough does not stick to your teeth and has just the right amount of bounce. We tried the crystal shrimp rice roll which has become one of our family favourites! Their Siu mai, shrimp and pork dumpling, is also very good. They grind up their own pork and the meat is incredibly juicy.
Overall we had a wonderful experience and will be back soon!
