I was walking around midtown today and was surprised to see a line almost a half block long outside of Chikubu (44th/5th Ave-Madison). Apparently, they're running a special today -- TODAY -- only serving eel dishes, starting at some ungodly price of $3 or something. Go, right now, if you're nearby. I'm not sure if this special continues for dinner, so it might be worth a call.
Also, I was checking out the menu at Nakagawa (44th btw 5th-6th) and I noticed that they serve kaiseki menus at $60-70-80 levels. My feeling is that this can turn out to be pretty good. Here's what I picture: some young creative but unknown chef in Japan has an opportunity to cook in NYC, so through relatives or other connection, he/she gets connected to a mid-level japanese restaurant, but can't really showcase his/her skills slinging out the regular menu items. He/she convinces the managers to let them see how a kaiseki menu will work. Well, maybe I'm daydreaming a bit. So, has anyone been?
