See what they've done there?!

This large country dining pub is 'fine'. I imagine it would be great to take extended family for a Sunday lunch with plenty of room to run around for the kids. It looks handsome, bags of space, keen staff, everything arrived hot and timely, lots of Cheshire folk celebrating birthdays, dressed to the nines...

But the menu reads much more promisingly than the reality. Mrs Kirkhams cheese and ham hock hash was a deep fried (and greasy when pressed) patty. Generous with the hock, couldn't taste the cheese, the yolk in the poached egg on top was set. A 'tasting of mini bangers' from the local butcher was 6 identical normal sausages with some brown sauce. Hmm.

Pressed roast pork belly had chewy gelatin on top rather than crackling and the mashed potato had developed a skin. My turbot was nicely cooked but the accompanying crab risotto was claggy, unseasoned and crab-less and I had exactly two slivers of fennel in the advertised pickled fennel salad accompaniment.

Shame! Off to try the Pheasant in Tattenhall next...
