In response to some of the rumors I read here last week comes interesting news from the Houston Business Journal:
"The hot rumor du jour being served up this week on the restaurant scene is word that Tilman Fertitta is about to swallow and digest another familiar restaurant rival.
Inside sources say the merger-hungry chairman of publicly traded Landry's Restaurants Inc. is negotiating the purchase of the popular Churrasco's and America's restaurants from Michael Cordua.
Mention of a possible acquisition, however, draws an adamant denial from the Cordua kitchen.
"No, there is no truth to the rumor," says Gretchen Ferguson, who handles public relations for Cordua.
One source begs to differ, noting that "a lot of employees at Churrasco's claim a deal is in the works."
Indeed, such a union would make sense for Fertitta, who expanded his sprawling restaurant empire with the acquisition of Tony Vallone's Grotto and La Griglia concepts in late 2003."
