Mi Rancho - Arepas and empanadas in Sunnyvale

mdg | Mar 11, 201206:26 PM

Mi Rancho has recently opened in the shopping mall space at Fremont and Mary in Sunnyvale that used to house Tsingtao Taste. In addition to the usual taco / burrito suspects, they also have a selection of Colombian and Venezuelan food, including some Colombian dinner specials.

This weekend I tried the Venezuelan arepas de pollo and the Colombian empanadas. The areas were the standout for me. I can't recall having these before, so I have no point of comparison, but they were might tasty. The empanadas were also tasty but had a pretty low filling to dough ratio. Again, I have little experience with empanadas, so maybe that's authentic, but the arepas were more to my taste. I also had a pollo asado taco which was just fine. I've had 4 of the salsas at the salsa bar and enjoyed them all, especially the fruity orange-colored salsa.

This place is in a difficult location that has killed good restaurants before - hardly any visibility from the street - so please come check them out. I'd love to hear reports from people who have more experience with Colombian and Venezuelan food. They have a web site at http://mirancho.ws; the address is 1250 S. Mary Ave. in Sunnyvale.
