OK, I've been eyeing this new Mexican place on west Main for a while, wondering when it was going to open up. It is just across from KFC and a few hundred feet up the road from Casa Villa (which I've talked up on this board). I've been a little skeptical, since they had the stereotype "mexican" decorations on the outside - I was fearing another american mexican place. I was very pleasantly surprised. I went there for lunch and have only great things to say about it - and I'm kind of picky about mexican.
I had tacos al pastor and pollo. Both were amazing. the al pastor was very tender, not the least bit dry and full of flavor. The chicken taco, which I'm not usually all that fond of for a taco filling, was amazingly juicy. Certainly the best chicken taco I've had in ages. Maybe ever.
Perhaps most promising was the carnitas. I tried to order it, but they weren't serving it yet (I took an early lunch). What makes it promising, however, is that I could see it cooking in a huge stock pot. It was simmering in a vat of lard, and they had just turned it up to brown it - in other words, they were cooking carnitas like it's supposed to be cooked, slow boiled in lard, then crisped at the end. Mmmmm... I'm going again this week to check it out and will report back.
The place is brand new, so it is pretty bare inside, but really clean. Their menu is small, but tacos are $2 and burritos are $2.50.
I'm curious what others will think of the place. If you go (which I recommend) please report back. With Casa Villa, Tortilleria el Paisano in Port Chester and now this place, we are beginning to get some really promising Mexican in the area. About time.
