Mexican gems of the Southside

If you have a car or don't mind the 55 bus/a bit of a walk, check out these two places: Elias, on Kedzie and 60-something. It's about a ten minute walk from where the 55 bus to Midway stops on Kedzie. A small, not quite hole-in-the-wall Mexican place with incredibly garish paintings and friendly staff, you can eat a meal for under 5 bucks. The soup and chips you get with every order are almost a meal in themselves. It's got generous portions, great atmosphere and wonderfully cooked old-school Mexican cuisine. I recommend the orchata as well, both to first timers and orchata aficionados. If you like pastry, keep going on 55th street for about 5 minutes. There will be a place with big pink neon letters in the window advertising: CAKES! PASTELES! Fresh Mexican pastries in every form imaginable, perfect for dessert.
