A Mexican Cuisine Primer

Hi Chowhounds

Coming from the North where Mexican cuisine seem to consist of a couple of branches of Taco Bell and a Taco Time, I am happy to be in LA where there are so many more options. However, being somewhat of a newbie, I need a little bit of instruction or at least guidance to make sure I'm getting the most of my time in LA (will be here for a few months).

Can you guys recommend authentic Mexican places for me to try? Browsing through the previous posts of this board, it seems like there are distinct categories of Mexican eateries -- and I'm willing to try them all, from the "low-end" to the gourmet end of the spectrum. My only thing, for whatever it's worth, as it is a word fraught, is that it has to be "authentic."

Regional Mexican recommendations also sought.

For those of you shy posting on this board, I've included my email address and hopefully you can drop me a note there.

Thanks and I hope to learn from all of your expertise and experience!
