A Mess of Black Pepper

tmalleman | Aug 4, 201909:37 AM     5

Please help me with my marriage! A couple years ago, my wife began drawing my attention to the little layer of black pepper that surrounds the front burners of our stove after I’m done cooking. Not unreasonably, she concluded that I was being reckless when I waved the shaker over my eggs in the morning. I didn’t quite believe that, but tried to adjust and manage my behavior. She continued to find evidence of my pepper mess, which I keep on trying to avoid, to no avail. Nowadays, we’re driving each other crazy with this ongoing annoyance.

My question is: is there something in the nature of pepper that could be causing this? Certainly, it *seems* lighter than salt, which makes me think the super-heated “weather” above a frying pan might be flinging those little flakes away from the pan in a cloud. Does that make sense? (FYI: no complaints about my use of salt, which I’m sure I deploy with the same shaking motion.) Of course, I might just be an unredeemable slob with the pepper, try as I might. Any thoughts?
