Meriwa (SF) Eliminated from Dim Sum Challenge

Rochelle’s post today reminded me that I needed to report on the North Team’s test run at Meriwa in San Francisco’s Chinatown. In a word – DISGUSTING.

The team was looking for a low-end candidate and followed up a recommendation from an acquaintance. I hadn’t been there for more than 15 years (nor heard anything positive about it in the meantime), so tagged along.

The room was dark and dingy with a stale smell. It reminded me of some of the places I visited in China circa 1983 that hinted of former glories but were now frayed around the edges with sticky tables and hadn’t been vacuumed for 30 years. We were seated at a table that hadn’t been cleared yet.

Even though we arrived shortly after noon, it took nearly 20 minutes for any of the ladies with trays of food to come to our table. It took a concerted effort from us and our neighboring tables to flag one down.

We had a bad feeling by this point and decided to start with only three dishes to make a quick escape if necessary. The siu mai were slick with grease and hard to pick up with plastic chopsticks. The flavor was okay, but they squished with grease with each bite. The shrimp rice crepe was terrible, tasting of iodine and stale refrigerator. The third item was even more horrible, so much so that we’ve buried the memory and can’t remember what it was.
