Every Tuesday, we looked forward to ordering and savoring the roast beef sandwich at Dopo. When we first started going there for lunch, we experimented.....a pizza, the great salads, the other sandwiches on the menu. But it got to the point that sharing one roast beef sandwich was not enough. Over the past few weeks, we'd order one each, and marvel at its perfection: the perfectly toasted Acme bread, the marriage of the arugula, the mustard mayo, and of course, the wonderfully rare slices of roast beef, served warm, that brought it all together. I still salivate now thinking about it.
So....do all good things have to end? Our lunch yesterday was marred by very slow service (never happened before), and when the sandwiches arrived, the bread was too hot, and instead of a thick pile of meat, there were two overdone thin slices of roast beef. We asked our server if the chef was out for the day; turns out that he needed more hours, and took off for a new job. We tried to find out where so that we could recapture the elusive sandwich, but he's gone to work for a catering company. So we're off to Oliveto's cafe for our next lunch; but I wanted to write an ode to the perfect sandwich.
