About 6 months ago, I was back in Toronto visiting some friends and just basically having a rowdy night on the town and after having had our beverage fill, we were looking for something to take care of the solid food requirements. Unable to mobilize to any great distance, we stumbled upon a late-night eatery that, to me, seemed to have the lights of heaven shining down upon it (it was a long stumble). Mel's Montreal Delicatessen (440 Bloor St W, 416.966.8881).
Okay, so I'm not in Montreal (nor am I on the Montreal discussion board, for that matter), but these eats were still good enough for me to write about. Details of the establishment are a little foggy (given the circumstances), but for some reason I'm able to recall the meal (funny, ain't it?). But from what I do remember, it's a nice, funky little deli on the corner of Bloor & i-can't-remember ... narrow and long, with a decent number of seats (although apparently there's usually a tiny wait). We were lucky enough to be seated right beside the kitchen (which is out in open).
Anyways, being from Canada but now living in Boston, I felt as though I should get my fix of Canadian grub this visit, and in doing so, try to kill two birds with one stone (or eat two delicacies with one mouth). Poutine with Montreal smoked meat. Need I say more ? Well, maybe I will. It may not have been as good as the MSM in some places in Montreal, but it was as damn good as any I've had in Montreal that I can remember. Huge plate of fries that were standard in size & shape, but crisp and flavorful on their own (not that there were many of em that made it out untouched). The gravy had a moderate viscosity (not runny nor completely solid) and I'm not sure what kind of cheese was used, but it was good & plentiful. The MSM thrown into it all was def'y the highlight. A new experience for me, and def'y not the last. Very generous with the meat (which can be cooked to your specs, btw), and the added smokey-meatey flavor to the whole thing was just fantastic.
Would love to hear other people's thoughts on this joint, and the experiences with the many other items on the menu. Apparently they do a really good breakfast.
PS. oh yeah -- they're open 24hrs (!)
