Mei Long in Mountain View -- wow!

visitor | Mar 10, 200407:00 PM

Back home visiting parents (I live on the east coast) and we decided to try Mei Long in Mountain View (Shanghai style food), based on recommendations here. It was great! Most dinner entrees $9-15. Address: 867 E El Camino Real, 0.5 miles south of Hwy 85. Tel: 650-961-4030.

The host recommended four dishes as good examples of the restaurant's cuisine:

a) braised prawns in garlic and tomato sauce, pea sprouts, and vermicelli ($14)

b) chcken breast in ginger and vinegar sauce, emerald spinach and jasmine rice ($12)

c) pan roasted chilean seabass, sweet pepper julienne, steamed rice shao mai ($20)

d) eggplant croquettes, minced pork stuffing in yu shiang sauce, pork dumplings ($11)

We ended up trying all but the seabass. The prawns were great, but the chicken and eggplant were truly fantastic. In each case the included vegetables complemented the main part of the dish well.

We also got the appetizer platter -- OK but the taste of breading sort of overwhelmed the rest of it.

I've been to a number of great Chinese restaurants in the San Gabriel Valley (southern Cal.), but this was the first time I'd been to such a great place that seemed to cater to American tastes. I.e., here the food seemed a bit more friendly. Still delicious though.

The place was almost empty early on Tuesday evening. I hope they're getting enough customers to survive. Highly highly recommended.
