Mehtapor which has "small dishes" opened in Tribeca. The owner and chef had cooked at a Jean Georges restaurant, and owns Graffiti in the East Village.
I was thrilled that such a restaurant was opening but after eating there I wasnt thrilled with the food. The restaurant is built into the lobby of Duane St Hotel, very bizarre. The seats are not comfortable at the counters. The goat cheese/truffle pizza is excellent and by far their best dish. The ceviche shrimp dish was good too. The lamb shank was so so, The poprock oyster is a ridiculous dish, maybe good for a restaurant like Ninja, but not a place where people want good food. Poprocks are for kids! and they are annoying to have in food, except if they are in cotton candy. Several dishes were tasteless. I will go back, but the food needs to be stepped up a notch. It is by no means on the level of Brooklyn Fare or EMP. Oh yeah , it is fairly expensive too. I think $85 for 7 small courses. Mehta is a pastry chef and didnt offer any pastires. The tres leches cake was not too good and that was the only cakelike dessert.
