Head's up on a new restaurant at the intersection of Kingshighway, Gravois and Loughborough in south St. Louis. Mediterranean Cafe or the Appolonian, it apparently goes by both, opened about three weeks ago. Run by Albanians. I'm told the chef used to be at Olympia but I haven't verified this yet. What I can say is that it has some of the best Greek salad and gyro's I've come across in quite some time and at prices that are astonishingly low.
My better half and I have eaten there three times now. We had Greek salad, gyro's and, of course, that Greek standby, hamburgers all of which were excellent. At each meal we've been given a free dessert. Baklava, "zoupa" and "tubla", the last two of which I have probably wildly misspelled but both of which were very good. They make an excellent expresso also.
While you eat you can watch Albanian TV on a flat screen television. Plenty of Albanian customers give the place a European flavor, grizzled men drinking thick expresso, smoking cigarettes (sorry for you non-smokers but it smoking is allowed) and chattering away. Last night Albanian television featured a movie that appeard to be from Brazil with Albanian subtitles. Can I buy a vowel?
We highly recommend giving this place a try and would be interested in fellow Chowhound reactions.
