Upon arrival at your Emerald city on a piping hot day that was 10c hotter than Toronto, I proceeded to check into my hotel and meet up with my Singapore chowfriend and his family in Redmond.
After hearing multiple warnings about our initial reservation - McCormick & Schmick, we decided to change our first dinner venue to Matt's instead.
Located in a quaint and modern plaza in the center of town, the restaurant resembles most chain steak house across the continent.
After settling down and quench our thirst with ice cold root beer, we ordered the following for our group of 5:
- Platters of selection of Washington State Oysters
- Seafood Chowder
- Dungeness Crab and Avocado Dip
- Sauteed Manila Clams in Garlic, White Wine, Lemon Broth
- Alaskan Halibut Fish and Chips
- Charbroiled Filet Mignon
- Wood Oven Roasted Prime Ribs. Au Jus
- Sauteed Wild Gulf Prawns
- Southern style BBQ Ribs
- "Grass Hopper" - a concoction of mint chocolate goodies
- Strawberry and Blackberry Crumble
Coming from Toronto, one of the best culinary center in North America, I was totally unsure as to what quality food awaits me in this pseudo family restaurant. However, when the food came, the result was a pleasant delicious surprise! A great start to my trip! Pheeeew!
The oysters we ordered were pristine fresh and well shucked. Seafood broth was creamy, full of shellfish umami and extremely flavorful. The Italian approach clams was nicely executed with the clams perfectly cooked. The crab dip was generous with crab meat but a touch on the heavy side. All the entree dishes were nicely prepared and cannot be faulted with the top price going to the Prime Rib which was perfectly executed. Tender and tasty, it can easily rub shoulder with my reference yard-stick, Lawry's of LA. Desserts were equally delectable with thumbs-up going to the delicious berry crumble.
Overall, the family dinner of homy comfort food was most enjoyable and a pleasant surprise to our group of foodie chowhounders!
