Masterchef Junior 2/3/2015 spoilers

The top 8 return. For their first challenge they must make a cooked dish using bananas. Some really neat dishes come out of this challenge, but the top 3 are Nathan, Ryan Kate and Jenna. Jenna does a cocanut shrimp banana thing, Ryan Kate does a carribean pork with bananas and sweet potatoes, and Nathan makes some beautiful little mini macarons with banana cream filling. The macarons win the day, and Nathan gets a huge advantage in the next challenge. But before he finds out what it is, all the kids head to the Masterchef Restaurant where they meet Matilda Ramsay, Gordon's 12 year old daughter. She presents her favorite dish that her dad makes for her family when they are all together, a salmon en croute with Hollandaise sauce, minted peas and fingerling potatoes. The interaction with Matilda and Gordon is quite charming. (An aside here, I recall reading somewhere that Gordon's daughter is going to have her own cooking show soon. So I wondered if this wasn't a bit of exposure for her to help ramp things up. Altho at least they didn't plug her show). This is a taste and recreate kind of challenge, altho I'm pretty sure they had recipes in the top drawer of their station. They also had all the ingredients they would need already set out on their stations.
Nathan doesnt' have to cook and gets to go upstairs and eat salmon.
It's obvious this challenge throws a few of the kids. Gordon takes Matilda around to watch them cook, and tries to get Andrew to ask her out for dinner. Both kids look embarrassed and Matilda tells dad she would never marry a chef anyway.... "Because you're a nutter."

Meanwhile, right at the end of the challenge Jenna's Hollandaise won't thicken and she literally is in hysterics. Andrew goes over to help and talks her through what she needs to do and the sauce thickens and she is fine. The judges comment that they've never seen a contestant do that in either junior or adult, stop what they are doing and go help someone else.

Pretty clear and obvious differences between the top and the bottom. On top are Jenna (with her sauce) Andrew, Jimmy and Ayla. Altho it was close between Jimmy and Andrew, Andrew came out the victor. (Another aside here. Ayla seems to really be coming on strong in the competition now, but still... no talking head confessionals of her at all and very little screen time. Strange).

The bottom three, and rightfully so, are Riley, Ryan Kate and Kayla. All of them had problems with undercooked dough, or too much dough, as well as over cooked salmon. At the end of the day, Ryan Kate and little tiny Riley are sent packing. I thought Riley was getting in over his head especially competing against 12 year olds. I thought Ryan Kate might last longer.
