Massimo's gelato.......yum

John Gonzales | Feb 17, 2004 03:06 PM

Stopped at Massimo's to grab some desserts for V-Day dinner at home. I was surprised that none of them, incl. Massimo, had ever heard of Chowhound.
Anyhow I got a fruit tart and a flourless pistachio cake. The former was good as usual. The latter very interesting. The volume of ground pistachios made it very dense, somewhat dry, even with the layer of custard. However, it shined when combined with the Giandughia (choco hazelnut) gelato. This was some tasty stuff. Rich deep intense giand. flavor.
The quality of the Gelato stood out as much as his pastries and truffles or moreso. Pricey at $6.25 per pint-size, but worth it. There were plenty of interesting flavors, including pistachio which I'll be trying soon.
It's sold from a case at the main shop on Washington, and I guess (haven't been) by scoop etc. at the gelato shop on abbot kinney.
