Zero Mario ummm...Zio Mario's review (SD)

I tend to hesitate in posting negative reviews, after all, tastes and preferences are so subjective ...but this was an interesting experience. I also usually will not post a negative review based on one visit, so this would exclude most of the establishments where I've had lousy food, after all, why would I want to engage in such a masochistic exercise?

Against my better judgment we decided to try Zio Mario's based on some local publications' "Best of" list. According to this web site Zio Mario’s was voted as the best Italian in SD. So we drove up to Adams Ave……

Now to the chow….

I had the Chicken Marsala….it came with two little forks full of pasta with marinara sauce, bland, marinara sauce….the Marsala sauce tasted very astringent…tongue numbing bitter!!! The two pieces of chicken were ok, a bit stringy; but it was a major disappointment, but could not in any way be compared to the Meatball/Spinach Calzone, which BTW the Waiter recommended. It was totally burnt on one side, I mean charcoal! Even the filling was burnt! My wife pulled out a piece of meatball that looked like a dark rye crouton, the feta cheese had been burnt solid. When we mentioned this to the waiter, he “kindly” (read: condescendingly) said, “that’s the way it’s supposed to be”. Now come on, we may be Asian……but who are you kidding, I’ve been eating Italian my whole life!!! So looking at it as a “total loss”, we just wrote off the whole thing….
