In Andrew Vachss' "Burke" crime novels, Burke's 'home base' is Mama's Restaurant, a hole-in-the-wall that serves swill to tourists, and the best food in the universe to its few loyal family members. It doesn't make money selling food, because it's a front to betting, gang activity, etc.
But the food is so exquisitely described, I'd swear Vachss has to have his favorite restaurant *somewhere*.
Any chance this place is more than legendary?
