Brief Malaysia food journal #2

I've eaten so much in the past week that it would be exhausting to go over everything i've tried. However, the highlights of the trip so far have been in Malacca, such amazing food! Personal favorite dishes one should not miss:

Hoe Kee Chicken Rice on Jonker Walk: All I can say is wow! While the chicken is above average, the rice balls are unlike anything i've had in Malaysia so far. We have tried chicken rice at several locations in KL and in Malacca, but Hoe Kee's were the best i've had, so flavorful! Maybe the coconut/chili sauce could have been spicier, but it was soooo good nonetheless.

Baba Laksa @ Jonker 88: All of the variations of Laksa are decent here, but the Baba Laksa is so fragrant and flavorful, the coconut laced broth is divine. I would even say that the tofu that is braised in the sauce trumps any like of seafood or meat in the dish. Noodles are springy and hold up in flavor to the rich and spicy broth.

Nancy's Nyonya Kitchen: Pretty much everything is amazing here. You wouldn't think by the name alone that Nancy's would be a good spot in such a touristy area, but the flavors are bold and don't hold back for foreign palettes. The Otok-Otok (fish cake) is soooooo good, my wife hates fishy flavors but couldn't get enough of this! Other notable items were the Nyonya coconut dumplings with ground prawns inside (for dessert! so good!) and their version of the spring roll.

One note however is that just outside KL my friends took us to a thai restaurant called Veg Fish Farm Thai that was supposedly amazing at one point but after our visit there, they swore to never bring anyone there again. The restaurant is in such a great location, but the food was pretty boring and dumbed down, obviously they are taking shortcuts. The Tom Yum tasted like a seafood broth, barely any sour or spicy notes. The salt baked fish was boring, and the prawns were overcooked. Not good.
