Making Bulgur Pilaf right now - advice on adding chick peas please?

Hi!

I'm making a bulgur pilaf that calls for adding the bulgur to the boiling stock and sauteed onions, etc., then turning off the flame and leaving it covered to sit for 45 minutes. If I wanted to add canned chickpeas, (trying to make it more of a meal), when would I add them so they turn out cooked enough but not mushy-

And it says not to uncover it at all, and I am still learning about cooking (years now - lol) so if I uncover it am I going to run the absorption of liquid, etc.? Also do I have to add more stock because the chickpeas will absorb some or no?
