Main Street Bakery in Salinas

Main Street Bakery opened across the street from Salinas High School late last year. It combines and relocates a previous bakery business with a mostly Mexican lunch counter/café set-up. Mom and I tried it in January.

Since Mom was so hungry, she bought a scone to nibble on while we waited for our hot food. The “blueberry” scone had a few artificial blueberries in a dry, rock-like pastry. Not recommended.

Mom had the soup of the day, caldo de pollo, $5.50, which was quite good for the price. Clean, clear chicken broth, a poached drumstick, and fresh vegetables. However, it was served barely warm.

I had a torta al pastor, $4.99, served up on a fresh and fluffy telera roll, toasted inside, and complete with all the garnishes --- avocado, tomato, refritos, onions, cilantro and salsa. The pastor was tender, caramelized on parts, and flavorful. But the sandwich was oddly sweet in some spots. When I opened it up, there was some sweet substance on some parts of the grilled side of the bun. Likely it was placed on a section of the flat top that had not been cleaned thoroughly.

Then back to the bakery part of the menu, we tried a buñuelo. Unfortunately, this was too greasy and tough rather than crisp.

A real mixed bag here, and my inclination would be to stay away from the baked goods. Perhaps with time in grade, the food side of the menu can shore up the weaknesses and deliver on its strengths.
