I will be making my first trip to your eastern shores in a couple of weeks and would like suggestions on where to eat. Let me say that I find greater joy in hole-in-the-wall haunts where an 80-year old woman is behind the counter making things only she knows the recipes to, rather than in hipper-than-thou restaurants where a hot young chef is fusing the cusines of eight countries. Don't get me wrong; I would plant myself anywhere if the food was creative, pleasantly surprising and most of all delicious but I would prefer to find that food at neighborhood places which would otherwise go unnoticed were it not for the advice of a local. If I gained some inspiration of any kind from a dining experience in NY, I would say my entire trip would be worth it. I eat anything and think that most meals taste better washed down with good (not necessarily expensive) wine, and am coming from Los Angeles so Mexican food is probably something I'd skip (I do not mean this as an insult to NY but the geography of California alone would lend itself to fantastic Mexican food...). I look forward to chewing on your suggestions.
