I'm throwing a big party on the eleventh, at which I've announced I'm going to be roasting a couple of geese. I had a little trouble finding them [it's probably easier around Christmas], but ChowHounds recommended Magnani, so I gave them a call. They said "no problem"--great! I arranged to pick them up the ninth [today]. This morning I drove over to Berkeley to pick them up, and was told "Oh, sorry--we tried really hard, but it turns out we just couldn't get any."
They didn't think to call and tell me, though?
So it's 2 days from the party, I'm out $30 for zipcar and tolls, I shot 2 hours I should have been at work, I have no geese, and it's now too late to order anything big [geese or otherwise] at any other butcher.
I just called Draeger's in San Mateo, and they happen to have a frozen one in stock--and they're calling around to their other stores to try to find a second one for me. *That's* more like it. [Of course, it's $9/lb, and frozen, not fresh, but at this point I'm kinda desperate.]"
