This newish (one month old) restaurant fills the former Dr.J's Vegetarian restaurant space hard by Papa Johns pizza on Westwood Blvd almost opposite Borders. This is a dismal area for parking and Borders is the best bet. Every time I have driven by it seems that the restaurant was closed but last evening went actually just to get a menu since I presumed the space was so small, it would be just for take out. Wrong. Charming little area in the front with tablecloths and cloth napkins and bow tied waiters (about six tables) and then four in the back where some very atmospheric Indian music was piped in. (Partner vetoed moving to the back because there was no exit in case of fire, a delicate point since her childhood home was burned to the ground when she was 7).
Anyhow, to the menu: North and South Indian Cuisine is the title here and the menu lists 104 items including drinks. We stuck to the Madras section and ordered Rasam, authentic South Indian sour and spicy soup - excellent and very spicy; Mulligatwany soup - top notch plus a Uttapams of tomato and peas - its a rice and lentil pancake flat and comes with two dipping sauces. Hoped it was like the marvellous chinese scallion pancake but this was a bit bland and undercooked (should have sent it back for another blast I guess. The main attraction was the Madras Fish Curry - lot of fish chunks and great flavor. Rice with this and a salted lassi.
This place has good service, promising food and a menu one could certainly have some fun with. The next table ordered a Paper Dosa which must have been three feet long - they loved it.
Closed Sunday; lunch buffet M-F $7.95 and Saturday is $9.95 but includes drinks on that day. Reasonable prices, good servings. Abyssmal parking.
