i've always been a little turned off by this place based on the big breakfast crowds spilling out onto the sidewalk. you see it just looks like a lot of work & patience to squeeze in for some diner food. well we happened to be passing by around lunchtime the other day & it looked invitingly crowd-free. we secured a table in the back patio.
ordered two zweibel burgers (having often admired their faded strip of window signage stating "home of the zweibel burger") plus two arnold palmers.
husband grimaced upon tasting the tea used in the drink. "it's that, that fruit flavored stuff! what's wrong w/good ol'black tea?" thankfully a vigorous stirring & the lemonade part masked the fruitiness a bit.
the burgers arrived quickly, cooked a perfect med-rare. it was a thickish, tightly formed patty w/clean edges, topped w/grilled flecks of onion(zweibel is german for onion, the original owner was german-american), mayo, tomato, lettuce, pickle chips, on a sesame seed bun.
it was very very juicy, one of the messiest burgers i think i've had. the beef flavor was intense, almost as if a bit of beef liver had been ground into the meat. interestingly no liver & onions on the menu.
i ordered the sweet potato fries(or was it yams), which were plentiful & a little undersalted. they looked baked, not fried & tasted fine. husband had suzy q fries, which seemed fresh.
the service was quick & very friendly. may go back & give breakfast a try, if we can get there early enough.
