My cousin and I had a fantastic lunch at FFS yesterday. We sat in the front window and played backgammon; waiter service was from the bartender.
Any criticisms that follow are nitpicking; lunch was really pretty great all round.
We started with the caesar salad, which we shared. It comes served with two croutons topped with baked tomatoes and white anchovies. While I thought the caesar was solid, and the croutons were wonderful -- sweet and not at all salty, with the slight vinegar tang of white anchovy - the dressing was a bit less lemony than I usually like.
My cousin had the fish and chips which is something along the lines of a tempura place but with beer batter; you get two asparagus spears in batter, some potato fingers and an onion ring with a curries tartar sauce. Fabulous batter, great oily fish, and the veg was solid. It also comes with two young carrots, pickled with star anise or fennel, I couldn't tell which.
I had the skirt steak sandwich which was a little tough to bite through but otherwise fab; a great roll (I usually find myself taking the meat off of bread in lunch joints, but this was a crusty, sweet roll with just the right amount of sticky white bread feeling to it), loved the steak sauce, good thick fries.
We ended up breaking down and ordering two glasses of wine which made the lunch bill astronomical, for us anyway: she had the rioja, I had the paige 23 2004 syrah.
An indulgence but a real treat. It gets bumping busy around noon with the culver city crowd.
