Luibuenos, mixed results

A friend and I went to Luibuenos for dinner this evening. The place was fairly busy but not packed, they were able to seat us without a wait a bit after 6pm. At first they were going to seat us at a high top near the bar, but we asked if we could sit in the upper area, by the windows and they were able to accommodate us there. We were promptly served chips and salsa, the chips were fresh and crisp, and the salsa obviously made in house, I would have liked the salsa a bit spicier, but it's Hawaii, land of tender palates, in any event it was fresh and tasty.

We didn't opt for an appetizer, but went straight to a main course. I had the special, which was Opah with a light sauce/glaze and carmelized onion served over a rice pilaf bed, there were a couple of thin slices of nicely prepared zuccini under there somewhere. The fish was nicely seasoned, and plated attractively. I think it could have done with a tad less cooking time, but it was not dried out. The waitress had said that all entrees were served with calabacitas, the house vegetable preparation, but I guess that didn't include on the special. All in all quite tasty, but a bit on the steep side at $28.

My friend ordered the Caldo de Siete Mares, literally translates to Broth/Soup of Seven Seafoods. He expected something a bit thicker, more of a choppino, but he said the flavor was good. It comes topped with cilantro, shaved onion, and zucchini. He asked that the cilantro and onion be left off. Perhaps there is onion and cilantro in the basic broth, because while not topped with it, there was clearly both cilantro and onion in his soup. It didn't look like much, but by the time he was part way done eating the cilantro flavor was overwhelming, and he was not able to enjoy the broth. The server should have either made sure that cilantro and onion were not added, or told him when he ordered that the basic broth had those ingredients, but could be left out of the 'topping'. In hindsight he probably should have sent it back.

All in all not a totally successful meal, certainly less satisfying than I had hoped for based on all I have heard.
