Lucques (1st time)

ciao ny | Feb 23, 200503:09 AM

Friend visiting from NYC, likes and knows her food, thought I'd take her here for dinner. Made reservation for 7pm Sunday (2/20), evening. Host told me that it would be the set price menu with 2 choices; sounded good to me.

We were both very disappointed. Maybe the meals we had earlier in the week; Granita, very good with excellent service and Chameau, exceptional food also with excellent service made our expectations too high. Or maybe this Sunday dinner thing was the wrong time to try Lucques.

By no means was the food bad, just small portions, very rushed bored inattentive service and nothing special at all about what we ate. No app choice, Serrano ham with a sliver of Manchego and entrees, either mussels with coconut rice or confit of pork. Dessert, tiny wedge of cloyingly sweet key lime pie. Better stuff frozen at TJ's.

The mussels entree consisted of maybe 8 mussels with 2 tablespoons of coconut rice (no coconut detected); my confit of pork with black beans (less than 2 tablespoons of beans), was flavorful and a large enough portion for my friend to have a third so that she now had dinner.

Was Sunday the wrong night to have gone to Lucques?

We had a week day lunch at Cheebo; I eat here often and it's always good or very good. We had the chopped salad and porkwich sandwich. Large portions, half taken home.
Also, the evening she arrived we ended up having a midnight dinner at Swingers on Beverly. I'd never been and it turned out to be a very positive surprise; grilled ahi tuna sandwich and a wonderful burger. Always looking for great burgers. Attentive, friendly, and professional service, who knew.
