I guess this makes me less of a hip chowhound type, but I went to Morimoto again just to make sure I wasn't forgetting, losing my mind, or basing my opinions on outdated food and service. And I have to say, I still loved it. I wouldn't say that every single piece of sushi was equally perfect, but it was all good and the tuna was consistently excellent - completely melting in our mouths. Everyone at my table ordered second rounds of tuna rolls.
Now I'm not going to claim to be a sushi afficionado, but I have had sushi all over New York and in some parts of Asia so I don't feel like I have no right to judge sushi, as some posts have seemed to imply (not about me specifically of course :) )
It is pretty expensive, perhaps more so than it ought to be, and I can admit that you're paying more for the atmosphere than for the food, but I still think the food is great. And the service last night, for the record, was really good - our waiter was very friendly and helpful.
Always a dissident,
