My work has been taking me far afield in Upstate NY lately. I've been to the Catskills twice this week and to Batavia (outside Buffalo) once. While I mostly enjoy Alex's place across from Batavia Downs, my find of the month is a place I've been looking for since I heard about it last year. It's an unassuming storefront at 81 Center Street in Ellenville (Center is one of the few lights on Route 209 in Ellenville, the first light if you're coming from Route 17). I went in the afternoon when the only people around seemed to be part of the place or related somehow. Everyone was friendly and the chef was busy making blueberry pies. So I sat at the counter and had a delightful side of salad (a mesclun mix with homemade balsamic vinaigrette) and a house special burger (cheese, bacon and mushroom). It was a 1/4 pounder on a whole grain bun, perfectly cooked. The fries were good and the pickle was of the crispy kind. The girl down the way who was eating a big house salad (which you can order with different toppings) said I should have tried something special, like one of the wraps. I thought the burger was pretty special though I'll try a wrap next time. I took a slice of blueberry crumb pie home and it was also good. They do a semi-homemade one by reforming ready-made pie crust, but their filling is tasty. All in all, I would recommend it and think I'll try their breakfast next time. I didn't check the hours while I was there, but a local article from when they first opened said they're open from 6 a.m. till 4 p.m. Sun-Wednesday and till 9 p.m. on Thurs-Fri-Sat. It is certainly a great addition to the area, which is starting to look up. They also have entrées of different types and specials every day. The portions are big and the prices reasonable.
