Has anyone tried the live abalone for sale at Koreana Plaza, the pan-Asian supermarket in Oakland? Their ad in the latest issue of BaySpo shows live abalone for $12.99 a pound. It said that about five or six make a pound, so obviously these are not that large. And take away the shells and the actual cost goes up. The ad says they are only put on sale every Friday afternoon, so presumably they are shipped or flown in from somewhere.
If they are live, then they would be ideal to eat raw. And, for those who have never cooked with abalone you should know that they really give off a lot of stock -- more than sea scallops, in fact.
