We got a chance to try Leopold's tonight and the hype is accurate. I get to Germany about once a year on business, and visited Vienna once a few years ago. This is the first German / Austrian restaurant in the San Francisco Bay area where I would feel comfortable bringing a homesick visitor from those countries.
The star of the night was the schnitzel, better than nearly any I've had in Germany. The fresh bread crumbs worked amazingly well and the warm potato salad was excellent. My wife's braised pork cheek was also good, though there was a bit too much of clashing flavors on the plate; some simplification would probably work better. We split a delicious watercress, fennel, and arugula salad to start, and a very nice apple strudel with vanilla sauce to end.
The beer and wine selections are both wonderful. I had a Stiegl lager, an Austrian beer new to me that tasted just fabulous with nice malt / hops balance. My wife had a glass of the Austrian sparkling rosé, a choice both unusual and delicious.
The room is great too - just what you might expect from a local Austrian place transplanted to San Francisco.
Highly recommended for those who like central European food!
