What to do with leftover onions and sauce?

I made short ribs tonight on a bed of onions covered in a jarred barbecue-type sauce. There are a lot of onions and sauce left after eating the meat and I'm not sure what to do with them. I don't want them to just go in the trash, they're too tasty and perfectly good. If I froze them, could they be used as the base for a soup?
