About once a year questions about Le Castelas come up, how to contact, whether it is still operating.
Several weeks before, we easily made reservations for Sunday lunch by phone. (04.90.74.30.81) I called the day before to confirm, equally simple phone conversation.
I was told that lunch is served at 1pm.
We arrived a few minutes early. The tables were set and early arrivals were already enjoying sangria. Around 1:15, bread and wine appeared, along with ham. Then grilled red peppers and ratatouille. Oh, and pitchers of red wine.
We were seated at what I thought was going to be the or at least an Anglo table. Then a French couple was seated next to us. Apparently, there was a rather enormous birthday party at the far end of the tables. We estimated they served at least 75 people that day.
Long serving boards of roast pig were paraded for everyone to see, then removed for service on platters with roast potatoes.
At all times there was a generous amount of food on the tables.
Next, plates of a half dozen kinds of goat cheese were brought out, then gateau au chocolat and finally coffee.
I need to emphasize the generous quantity of each and every of these courses. We all sat around the table long after the meal was over, and some 3 1/2 hours after we arrived, we went to look for Giani to pay up.
The tab, an absurdly low 30€ per person.
At this time of year, the sloping meadow is a brilliant green, overlaid with a carpet of miniature white wild flowers on which kids and dogs romped throughout the afternoon.
A wonderfully fun Sunday afternoon.
CAVEAT: WEAR SUNSCREEN! It will take me all season to even out my scorched neckline!
