Layaly - The Richmond, SF - Quick Report

Last weekend, after a beautiful afternoon in Golden Gate Park, I went with two others to Layaly for an earliesh dinner. My DCs had been before, but I hadn't, and overall I thought it was quite good. The food is described as "Mediterranean" - I think it's Lebanese owned and influenced?

We shared a Lebanese style salad - I don't have the menu with me, so I forget the name, but it was only OK. The dressing had too much olive oil which made it a bit unbalanced and bland. We also shared a dip made w/ squash and tahini - this was very good, had a nice creamy texture, and was served with warm pita. I'd go again just for this.

Each of us had a different grilled meat, all w/ french fries which were homemade and good (I'd give them a 7.5 on a scale of 1-10). I had chicken kabob which had great spicing - interesting flavor combination of coriander and some other spices I couldn't quite identify. DCs had the kofta kabob (tender and juicy, very good) and the shrimp kabob (my friends liked it, I thought it was a bit dry). The kabobs came w/ some grilled veggies (tomatoes, onions, peppers) - these were fine.

We shared one order of homemade rice pudding for dessert, which was also good but not outstanding - again, probably 7.5 on a scale of 1-10. It was a bit too sweet for my taste.

Service was very friendly, and the space was very nice. Overall this place seems good and reliable, though not necessarily innovative or particularly thrilling. However, I'd definitely return if I was in the neighborhood or craving some squash dip or grilled Mediterranean meat.
