On my rather long trip from the SF Bay Area to Central America, the one must stop place was Caliche's. SF is lacking in both frozen custard and Italian Ice.
While this wasn't what I was looking for, I enjoyed Caliche's a lot and will stop by whenever I'm in the area.
The Valley Drive location is an old-time ice cream stand. It is in an unpaved lot with big menu boards on each corner of the building.
The custard itself isn't eggy or thick enough to satisfy my East Coast cravings. It is very nice tasting and a good soft serve.
The big thing here is mix-ins. I had the berry swirl which had bananas, sweetened strawberries and salted pecans mixed into the frozen custard. Those salted pecans really elevate everything. This is the same idea as Coldstone Creamery ... only with good ingredients.
The dessert ice is more like sorbet than lemon ice. Today's flavors were mango and lemon. The lemon was quite good, fresh tasting and tangy. The mango wasn't that good.
I didn't like the hot dog either, but they gave me the wrong one and not the Spicy dog wihich has green chili. This has sweet pickle sauce that was almost soupy and a squiggle of ... hmmm ... was that mustard, catsup or both.
The dog was only ok. Great bun though. It had a nice eggy color to it and was nicely dense and tasty.
All in all, I enjoyed the place.
