Saranac Sourdough on Saranac Avenue has a killer, albeit slightly misnamed, sandwich called the Asian Eggplant. It contains eggplant rounds coated in an oily, slightly spicy peanut based sauce. The counterperson described the spices as Thai, but the overall effect was Indian spices seasoning a small amount of sate. Whatever the contents, the taste was excellent. The eggplant was served on sesame semolina sourdough and was very filling. The bread was so fresh and delicious that we bought a loaf to fortify us on our drive back to the city. Although all of the bakery's breads are called sourdough, they are somewhat mild compared to Bay Area sourdough – not a real complaint though because the black sesame seeds and slight tartness of the warm bread made my mouth water.
