Stopped off at Lady French bakery, at 39th St. and 9th Ave. near the Port Authority, and saw that, among all the pastries, the lady who runs the place offers two Thai dishes - ala Joey Thai. It was 11:30 a.m., and when I said I wanted the chicken curry, she expressed surprise and pleasure, apparently because a 40-something white guy wanted to eat her Thai food. The chicken curry was good, not great. It was chunks of chicken and green pepper, with basil, in a curry sauce that was a bit thin and not as rich as the better curries I have had. The portion was generous, and it cost $6.25. She also makes Tom Yum, which I did not try. I asked her whether she wanted to expand her Thai menu, and she explained that in order to do that she would have to hire another person or two, and she didn't want to do that. She said the two dishes are things she can make mostly in advance and just heat up, and that the great majority of her business comes from bakery items. When I asked her where I could find good Thai food in Manhattan, she said I should go to a place at 28th St. and 8th Ave. Does anyone know what restaurant she is talking about?
