L’Académie review

Christine | Oct 14, 2005 10:05 AM

I went to l’Académie in Brossard last night.

I don’t think I’ll ever go back. It was my 2nd time there. First visit didn’t impress me. I had to check it out to know for sure. I’m frustrated. I don’t know what it is. Usually I love or hate. L’Académie just leaves me…unimpressed. And frustrated. I want to like it there! But it lacks the little “ummph” that makes you want to go back.

It was packed with people celebrating something. I’d never go there unless it’s 8-9pm on a Wednesday night, being starved and happen to be in the area. But never for a special occasion.

First time I had the magret de canard with a raspberry/port sauce. Pretty good but the portion was small for $22. Bread was average/good. Nothing outstanding. Service was slow.

This time the service was slow, cold, not really professional. I had the moules marinières & frites. Mussels were good. The fries were the worst I ever had in my entire life. No kidding. They were cold. I can make better fries. It’s not really complicated to do! Even store-bought fries would haven tasted better in this case. I *dared* to ask our waiter for some ketchup. I thought he’d have come back with a mini bottle of Heinz. He brought me 7 ketchup packets (just like they have at McDonald’s). Inadmissible for a restaurant like L’académie and on top of that he made me feel extremely uncomfortable. (he didn’t even look at me)

The thing is, L’Académie is better than fast food chains. But that’s it. Their ingredients come straight out of the can (ex: artichokes & ketchup). Nothing is spectacular. Just boring. It lacks flavor. The problem is, their swanky décor sets your expectations higher than what they should be. It makes you think you’re in a “gourmet” restaurant when it’s clearly not the case.

Don’t let the décor fool you!!

So if you have $15-20, you should seriously go elsewhere. Unless you live on the South Shore like me.
