La Ultima , Danville - New Mexican, sort of

Jim M. | Nov 3, 200412:05 PM

La Ultima was mentioned a few months ago but no one had a recent visit. They used to have branches in Oakland and Walnut Creek, but those are closed now. I tried the one in Walnut Creek once and was so disappointed I never went back. Although they had New Mexican dishes, the food wasn't very distinguishable from, and was a lot more expensive than, plenty of Mexican restaurants in Concord.

I really wanted to like this restaurant and hoped that with the closing of the other two, they could shine at this one. Briefly, they didn't shine. We tried stacked enchiladas and chile verde (both $11.95). Generous servings and neither was bad, but they didn't have the depth or freshness of chile flavor that one can find in New Mexico. They say they get chiles from New Mexico, but they must really suffer in transit. They also have adobada, sopaipillas with chile, and posole; also tacos, burritos, and other dishes that aren't particularly NM-style. I'll probably try them again with the hope that the adobada or posole will be better, but I'm not going to rush back. They won't transport your tastebuds to Albuquerque.
