The potato chips at La Palma Mexicatessen (2884 24th St in the Mission) are back to their former grandeur. There'd been some drift after they'd taken lard out of the mix, but they've found ways to balance and compensate for this loss, and these are once again the finest potato chips I know of in the continental United States.
Also, I saw the counter guy preparing a torta, and it was droolingly beautiful. I normally find their prepared foods good-not-great, but the torta seemed of an entirely higher class. I did have a Nicaraguan tamal, steamed in banana leaf, and was charmed to find that it consisted not just of masa, but of rice as well.
They seem to be applying for a permit to operate a cafe; not sure if that'll be in the same location or if they'll be expanding.
