Definitely not the "house of pain"....

Went by today to have a look and pick up a croissant. Solid agreement with everyone who has recommended this place - these are the best croissants I've had in LA, heck, maybe anywhere. (I've had random pastries all across France though no pilgrammages to noted temples of flaky bliss).

They are fantastic - light, flaky, crisp on the outside and with a great lingering sense of sweetness from the butter. (Note to waist: I'm sure they use very, very little butter. This is LA, after all. It's probably soy latte butter - yeah, probably so)

They also have this crazy giant folded bundle of bagette dough laden with butter and sugar that looks like it could feed a family of four. One sin at a time - that meal of a pastry will have to wait till next time.

This place is hugely worth a stop - it's in the developing soon-to-be-hip stretch of Pico near Hauser.
