La Jolla Report

We stayed in La Jolla the past four days. I had posted about good taquerias in SD; didn't get over to the recommended one, but had some nice meals in LJ.

Alfonso's - 1251 Prospect - We have been to LJ three times and we always end up at this solid, reliable Mexican place that has excellent seafood. We had planned to go to the Karl Strauss brewery but there was a 45-minute wait at 8:30 Friday night so off we went to Alfonso's, which was also crowded but had tables available right away. I had the crab chipotle enchiladas and my husband had a carnitas plate.

Barbarella - 271 Avenida de la Playa - We had a very pleasant lunch here. My husband had the Croque Monsier and I had the Margherita Pizza. It's in a lovely garden setting and we had our own private outdoor booth among the flowers. Service was good. We had to take his business colleagues to dinner on Sunday night and we decided to take them here since it's the type of place where most anyone can find something they'd like. They loved it. Dishes we had were snapper, duck confit, and two pizzas. They serve mainly Cal-Italian.

La Taverna - 927 Silverado St. - This tiny place was near our hotel and we just walked in at 9:00 on Saturday night and got a table. What a find! Very authentic Italian where everything is either imported from Italy or made in-house. I had shrimp scampi over excellent aldente pasta and my husband had their house speciality homemade fennel sausage over pasta with marinara sauce. We shared a salad special with greens, a wonderful Italian cheese, walnuts and cranberries. We will definitely go back there on the next trip. Only a dozen tables or so with indoor and outdoor seating. Great atmosphere and wonderful service.
