Kyu3 in the TL -- Thai Noodles, Japanese BBQ and Squid Ink Fried Rice [San Francisco]

soupçon | Feb 6, 201508:43 AM     9

Kyu3 Noodle & BBQ is the 3rd venture by the group that brought us the Post Street Kyu Sushi (which spawned the Fujiyoshi Ramen pop-up that eventually took over the restaurant) and Kyu Sushi in Alameda. Despite the fascination with sushi, the principals of record are all Thai, or would appear to be based on their names.

The noodle portion of Kyu3's menu is dominated by Thai specialties, including lesser-known ones like Sukhothai Noodles, Yen Ta Fo and Boat Noodles, while the BBQ portion of the menu is primarily Japanese, featuring Kushi and Kushiyaki presentations. There's also an admixture of intriguing mashups like Squid Ink Fried Rice and "Pad Sukiyaki Noodles".

I was drawn there to try their version of Sukhothai Noodles, offered by only one other SF Thai restaurant that I know of, Amphawa in the Richmond. Kyu3's version was considerably less spicy, but overall more balanced between spicy, sour, and sweet than Amphawa's and worth a try if you've never had Sukhothai Noodles and are somewhat spice-averse.

Despite being in the hear of the Tenderloin, on Jones St. opposite Father Alfred Boedekker Park, it's a cheerful and well-appointed spot.
